Some questions and thoughts you should consider.

Product-market fit is also about the willingness to fail but I think it’s about having the protection of some guiding set of properties about the underserved needs of customers.

Creativity requires curiosity.

Q:  Are your teams and organization curious not only about the product but about the customer?

Q:  Have you created happiness which is a precursor to curiosity and the willingness to fail and the protection to take chances?   Happiness can emerge from a number of ways but diverse experiences and true free time give it a fair shot of happening. No happiness, no curiosity, no creativity.

Q: Innovation comes in many forms. Clayton Christensen spoke about three forms; Disruptive innovation, sustaining Innovation or efficiency innovation. which one is your focus?  The answer impacts the next step which is a business operating system.  Which version of innovation is impacted by proper allocation of the right things to the right teams?

Q: Have you built a resource allocation engine that can create as unbiased of a means of Fairly allocating resources without ego?

Q: Does the resource allocation engine understand the differences of the type of innovation you are performing?

Q:  Do you allocate resources to a creativity framework?

So what should you do?

  1. Build creative thinking and product-market fit into your organizations
  2. Formalize the process to whatever degree you need but not too much process
  3. Have data sets that guide, help define what the underserved customer needs are
  4. Creat test audiences readily and just large enough to reach a set of clear, small goals
  5. Build a total addressable audience based on traits and desires.
  6. Let your mind wander, give it real free time, mixed with curiosity, you can enable happiness to happen – for real.
  7. Decide which flavor of innovation you are pursuing. Is it disruptive, sustaining or efficiency innovation?
  8. Whatever the answer is, allocated fairly. Without bias or ego. At least try.
  9. Make sure you’re cognizant of all three areas, creativity innovation and your business operating system.  these things don’t have to be formal but they do have to exist in some way in your executive team and management needs to have a core understanding.
