Does AI have a place in hiring?
People run businesses. They are the ones who program, create AI, create products and services.
It’s a requirement of a business to hire people who can create customers. There are people with mindsets that play integral roles in the business interlocking with one another, complimentary to each others capabilities.
Companies that do a good job of this have certain types of mindsets in certain positions. There’s businesses consistently improve mindset capacity over time.
Approximately 4% to 9% are stellar businesses. Nothing seems to get in their way. Pandemic, supply chain, employee issues….. they solve it. Certainly they have downsides but they recover far quicker than other businesses. According to McKinsey & Co, the A+ customer returns 4.3 times on capital versus the average of 1.5 for the lagging business types.
I am often asked why don’t all businesses just hire increased mindset capacity.
We’re often not aware of our mindsets. It’s the subconscious engine that drives our purpose. It as the stuff below the waterline, hidden to most. Another way to think about mindsets is that we don’t just have one kind but we have a blending of types – made up of personality traits. The subconscious is so hard to read, just ask all the investors that funded Elizabeth Holmes, Sam Bankman-Foolery, and just look at the latest news of sociopath fraudsters who willingly break very rule they can. Why did these astute investors see this coming? A: They can’t because they are ‘trait blind’.
This problem will exist to the end of time sociopaths find these blind spots and prey. It’s often the discipline mindset, the rule follower, can’t help but believe the stories of sociopath. They just can’t can’t see it. Just like you can’t see infrared light. This is the extreme problem but not the only problem. Corporations are filled with bias, obstructionist, narcissist, opportunist, etc. If you don’t measure it, it can’t be fixed.
The positive side of the subconscious
When teams of people are tuned around mindset capacity, it’s a wonderful predictor of future financial performance. If the company sticks to its guns, and keeps hiring better mindsets, it’s very likely that company is thriving. After measuring thousands of companies, it’s pretty clear certain mindsets blended into the right configuration are almost always successful. Adverse selection is less than 1 in 50.
Soft on hiring
Companies that get soft on hiring and try to fill seats are often making very bad decisions about hiring. They might be functionally seats but they’re letting in the obstructionist, the narcissist, the do-nothings, the empty suits. It’s friction at very high cost. I think of it as ‘operational debt’. It’s not that they’re bad people and it’s not that they don’t play a role somewhere. When you see a thriving company unknowingly lower its standards, impending financial troubles are just around the corner (6 to 18 months).
Watch for the systems thinkers / Turnarounds like this are rare. They do happen.
One of the telltale signs are the systems mindsets leave first. They always have the most opportunity. They hit the road. Finding employment and opportunities elsewhere and often in better situations. That sets the seeds of decline which are almost never reversed. Only great leaders see it coming and make that change. Jamie Dimon is one of those great leaders to change the tide. He’s rare. Since 2014 Chase has put up several tens of millions of net revenue and have hired 35,000 plus employees because they re-focused on Results driven leadership.
DEI is profitable
One very positive aspect of remote measurement is DEI. So many people in your organization are highly qualified yet not trending towards leadership. Very often they’re women and minorities. By measuring their subconscious you will be delighted to see how many of them can make such a positive contribution to your company. Remotely measuring the subconscious removes inherent bias in corporate hiring and promoting systems. Ones that you’re not aware of and can’t be.
In summary, remotely measuring mindsets is critical for your future success – just like radar and sonar are critical for piloting airplanes and ships. If you focus on a blend of different types of mindsets, in the right positions, add thinking capacity, you will succeed. By preventing adverse selection in hiring and promotion, you will fine tune and speed growth.
