Intel – what’s inside?

I really don’t like writing negative stories. Much of my early career was built on Intel chips (with an occasional amd ). Those old days of sitting in front of a desktop. Then a laptop. Thank goodness for AndyGrove and the team at Intel. If progress had been a lot slower, where would your career have been? Imagine going from a 486 to a Pentium in 10 years? Moore’s law had an impact on my career. The ability to process large amounts of data ever faster was very important to creating the technology are used today. We’re in a new era for intel and one that’s a little bit difficult to write about.

The above six charts are Mindset and net income.

What you see above is 10 years of net income, represented by the black line. The other colored lines are different types of mindset of the executive team at Intel. Who is on the executive team is represented by a mindset calculation. No one individual has all of one type. This is a blending of all Chiefs and Presidents. The dotted line represents how connected mindset is to net income. If the lines run together there’s a connection. If they’re separating or crossing, you’ve got a problem. The only place where they are in parallel, to some extent, is the disciplined mindset.

In five out of six cases the decline in mindset is counter to changes in net income. Clearly we have a net income problem. But we also have a decline in both starting in 2017.

Somewhere around 2017 things changed. Opportunistic hiring started to decline. Most likely that your sales teams represented in leadership. That mindset peak occurred in 2019 but started to decline much earlier.

Disciplined thinking is dominating the leadership mindset at Intel. It’s dominating because it’s the only mindset that is gaining traction and momentum while other metrics struggle. The most worrisome shifts occurred in 2015 and all the way back to 2011 when declines in results driven thinking and sharp declines in systems thinking began.
